Back in 2006, we produced what was called a Development Framework for the town centre. This was done following a series of public consultations in the Eastgate Centre in 2005 and early 2006.
The Development Framework set the Council’s aspirations for the future development of Basildon town centre, which is needed to certain areas of the town. The Council approved it in 2006, and since then, we have been working to get a private sector partner that can turn the plans (which are estimated to be worth £1billion!) into reality.
We are going through a lengthy process known as OJEU, and in September 2007, four major consortiums were short listed to go through the process to become the chosen ‘development partner’ for the project. It is expected that the chosen partner will be announced by the end of 2008.
The project takes a long time for a number of reasons, but mainly because we want to make sure we get the best deal for Basildon, and the best deal for the community.
Because it does take such a long time, English Partnerships have given us £2million to spend by March 2009 to do a number of minor or ‘interim’ works throughout the town centre prior to the partner starting the major project of redeveloping the whole town centre! The More campaign is funded from this money, and tells the story about what is happening now and what will be happening in the future
